What is MEO?

What is MEO?

Microbes populate everywhere on earth. They play essential role in various biogeochemical cycles, and consequently essential for all life on earth.
Metagenomic analysis, which can investigate the whole gene pool of microbes despite difficulty of cultivation, has revolutionized our understanding of microbes in environments.
Metagenomics data that was produced by the metagenomic analysis consists of the DNA sequence data and several metadata including information of experimental conditions and sampling sites.
Although these metadata have the potential of being a good description of microbial habitats, they lack the clear definitions of terms and structured relationships between terms.
We developed the MEO (Metagenome/Microbes Environment Ontology) that can describe the microbial habitats.

MEO was submitted to the BioPortal (http://bioportal.bioontology.org/ontologies/3009).

MEO Developers

MEO was developed by the MicrobeDB.jp Project Team (PI: Ken Kurokawa (Tokyo Institute of Technology, Department of Biological Information)).

Main MEO developers in the MicrobeDB.jp Project Team are:

  • Hiroshi Mori (Tokyo Institute of Technology, Department of Biological Information)
  • Shinobu Okamoto (DBCLS)
  • Shuichi Kawashima (University of Tokyo, Human Genome Center)
  • Junichi Takehara (Tokyo Institute of Technology, Department of Biological Information)
  • Koji Yoshino (Tokyo Institute of Technology, Department of Biological Information)
  • Nozomi Yamamoto (Tokyo Institute of Technology, Department of Biological Information)
